Naming, Describing,
and Submitting Digital Images

(Effective October 1, 2009)

Image Modification: For all categories except creative, the reality of the subject must not be altered. Slight adjustments to exposure and color balance elements, and minor noise elimination to enhance image quality without distorting the reality of the subject is permitted.

Image Preparation: Digital images must be 8-bit sRGB jpeg files with a maximum pixel width of 1024 and a maximum pixel height of 768. Vertical images must be no larger than 768 pixels high. The 1024 image width for vertical images is achieved by adjusting canvas dimensions to 1024 pixel width. Canvas color is optional, but black is highly recommended. Once your final image has been sized to submission format specifications, careful sharpening is recommended.

Image identification: Once you've got an image just the way you want it here's what you do:

1. Give the jpeg file a name.

Example: PT-Pic-short title.jpg

Note: The jpeg filename has three parts:
Club ID, Competition category, and short title.

PT=abbreviation for our club, Pic=abbreviation for Pictorial

Other category abbreviations are: Cre-Creative; Nat-Nature;
Trv-Travel; PJ-Photojournalism

2. Identify yourself and describe the image in metada.

Your name and the full image title (including Latin names for nature) go into the file's metada as shown in the example.

When constructing an image filename for submission, remember:

The Club and category abbreviations are separated with dashes (-) not underscores (_), or spaces.

The short title part of the filename may contain spaces.

(Particularly for Nature Submissions): Filenames should not start with the animal/plant name, because many members may have pictures of the same kind of animals/plants resulting in many filenames being almost identical.

The short title in the filename should be limited to the 30 characters. Don't include Latin naming here, that's in metadata.

The maker's name must not be be part of the short title.

Submitting your images: Digital submissions should be received via e-mail at our digital mailbox by midnight of the Sunday prior to turn-in date. This allows time to process, organize, and assemble the submitted digitals prior to meeting night. It also facilitates showing submitted images on submission night if time permits. It also allows time to catch any problems with naming or formatting so you can fix them prior to the deadline. Submit as attachments to an e-mail to: ptccdigital@comcast.net.

Important: The subject line of the carrying e-mail to ptccdigital@comcast.net should include your name and the category and submission date. Example: Subj: Ansel - August 7 Nature.
